H. Robert Krear, Ph. D., long-time resident of Estes Park and former seasonal naturalist at Rocky Mountain National Park, died in his home at age 95 on December 16, 2017, due to pancreatic cancer and liver failure. Krear was a World War II veteran who served as a platoon sergeant in the famed 10th Mountain Division where he saw action in northern Italy. He was a member of the 1956 Arctic Brooks Range Expedition, the result of which contributed to the creation of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), which currently protects the arctic wildlife and the last pristine arctic wilderness remaining in North America—and perhaps the world. Throughout his life, Krear was a professor, scientist, author, naturalist, and environmentalist.

Bob Krear was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 13, 1922. In 1943, as a member of the Pennsylvania State University ski team, Krear learned that the usually orthodox military was creating a very unorthodox division of alpine ski troops in the mountains of Colorado. At Penn State, he was in the Student Enlisted Reserve so he volunteered (requiring three letters of recommendation), was accepted, and when called, joined the 10th Mountain Infantry Division, along with several thousand other university skiers, at Camp Hale near Leadville, Colorado. Eventually, Krear earned the rank of Platoon Sergeant.
