Honor Flight.

On Sunday, September 19th, the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight Veterans will be returning from their visit to Washington, DC.. This is this Honor Flights' seventh trip and the Colorado PGR has participated in each of the previous six welcome homes at DIA. We are, once again, invited to welcome these men and women back home. Wanda and I have been involved with Rocky Mountain Honor Flight for nearly three years and have had the honor to serve as Guardians on three previous flights. We will be coordinating this welcome home. We hope to have Bagpipers, Warrior Transition Unit Soldiers from Fort Carson and a large crowd to welcome the Veterans to DIA. I will have Flags and banners. As has been the case in the past, the Flight is scheduled to arrive at DIA at around 9:00PM. The actual arrival ceremony will take place at about 9:30PM.

There are nearly 100 Honor Flight geographic Hubs in the United States with the goal of getting as many WWII Veterans as possible to Washington, DC to see the WWII Memorial that was completed almost 60 years after the War ended. 16 million served in the US Armed Forces during WWII. Approximately 4 million of these Veterans were still alive when the Memorial was dedicated in 2004. The number of WWII Veterans alive today is approximately 1.6 million and many of those are not able to travel due to health/physical limitations as the average age of these Veterans is now 87 years.

If you speak to any WWII Veteran that has taken this trip back to see their Memorial, they will tell you it was very special and something that they will never forget. Among the fond memories of these trips are the welcomes they receive upon arrival in the DC area as well as the wonderful return home greetings.

Jim Can you give more detailed info for the Sept 19 return activity. Where in DIA is the staging place and a staging time. Sharon and I plan on being there.

Sid, I suggest meeting at DIA, by 8:45PM, in the Main Terminal, where the fountain used to be.

Not sure if there is an escort back to Loveland, but we will be there for the welcome only.

Hulk, sorry, but, there are no special parking arrangements this time.

To clarify, the area where we will be gathering in the Main Terminal (where the fountain used to operate) is on level 5.

No guarantees, but if today works out as planned, I'm going to try and make a mad dash out to this. I'm off tomorrow, so I can't think of a better way to spend my evening/night.
