New PGR member, Terry Chatman, attended his first Mission about two weeks ago. He has missed few, if any, Missions since. On Thursday he was at DIA for the welcome home. He drove his truck and when he got home he took a ride on his bike. He was less than a mile from home when he was broad sided by a car who's driver did not see the red light, therefore, he was struck at a relatively high rate of speed. He has two or three broken vertebrae in his neck and many of the bones in his left foot were shattered. Terry is diabetic, so, the foot injury is very problematic and amputation is a real concern at this time. There is no consideration of doing any surgery until the tissue fully heals because of the risk of infection. Once the tissue is healed, they will go in and do reconstructive orthopedic surgery. The road to recovery will be a lengthy one, but, he is determined to ride again. That will require a replacement bike as his 2006 Yamaha/Star was totaled. Terry is in room 323 at University Hospital, just east of I-225 on Colfax Avenue. He is in the Burn Unit ICU simply because that was the only ICU room available, but, before you enter that area you must pick up the phone to be cleared through to his room. The risk of infection to the burn patients is the concern. Please keep Terry in your thoughts and prayers. Jim (303) 518-8790 edited by jwherst on 12/10/2011

Terry has been moved to room number 820. As you can imagine, the foot injuries are very painful and he is heavily medicated, but, he has a great attitude. He very much appreciates the thoughts, prayers and visits. Jim (303) 518-8790

Terry has again changed rooms. He is now in room number 827, which puts him in the physical therapy area of the hospital. They are working on rebuidling his upper body and leg strength. He said there has been some talk of releasing him from the hospital within the next week. Right now, it is a waiting game. The tissue must heal fully before the Orthopedic Surgeons can go in and repair the broken and shattered bones in his foot. Terry still has months of healing and hard work ahead of him. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

I visited Terry this afternoon. He was in good spirits and told me that they were going to release him from the hospital this evening. He will be going through physical therapy and possibly some more surgery, but in the meantime would like to attend PGR missions if he can find thart lives

Terry's phone number is (720) 215-5775. He would be very happy to hear from anyone that would like to chat, however, please do not yet consider taking him on a Mission. I just spoke with his wife, Colleen, and she indicated that the Doctors and Surgeons are not ready for him to leave his house for a number of reasons. His foot needs to be elevated at all times. He has developed an infection in his injured foot and in case he needs to go in for surgery, he must avoid human contact so that he does not pick up a cold or the flu. Terry has been very optimistic since the crash, which is great, but, he is really not close to being well enough to venture out of his house.
Again, he would love to talk.

Hang in there, Brother. I just got over an infection in my shoulder replacement and you HAVE to follow ALL the doctor's instructions. Stay indoors and NO CONTACT with anyone other than immediate family members in the same house. Don't skip any medications. Other than that, try to catch up on your reading and TV!!! I just received an update from Terry's wife, Colleen. He is back at University Hospital in room 835. He is scheduled for amputation surgery, tomorrow, Saturday, January 7th. The infection is spreading from his foot to his leg, so the surgery must be done as soon as possible to avoid further damage. I will stop by to see Terry this afternoon and will provide as much detail as I can when I return home. Following sugery, he will likely remain in the hospital for about three weeks.

Terry continues to remain in generally good spirits. His surgery is scheduled for 8:00AM on Saturday, January 7th. Due to the spread of the infection, the foot and lower leg will be amputated between the ankle and knee. His family will be with him during and after surgery, tomorrow. I am certain he will appreciate having visitors following a day or two of recovery and pain management following the procedure.
Please continue to send good thoughts and prayers his way.

Terry's surgery went well this morning. Colleen has asked that we not resume our visits until Tuesday of next week. It will be the weekend before he bounces back from the effects of the surgery and he has several meetings planned on Monday with Physicians, Therapists, Prosthetic Techs, etc..
Thanks.

Terry is feeling much better since the surgery and he is projected to be released from the hospital by next Wednesday, January 18th. It will be about three months before he is fitted with his prosthetic leg and foot. He was in very good spirits, today.
